According to ABI Research, in the next three years the market for near field communication (NFC) will grow as the technology matures. NFC enables data to be transferred between RFID-enabled electronic devices that are at close range. The NFC forum has more than sixty members including Microsoft, Motorola, Sony, Philips, NEC, etc. Wireless carriers, OEMs, payment processors, etc find representation in the forum.
Year 2006 will be one of trials and understanding the data accumulated in order to crystallize standards and interoperability issues so that the technology can cover cell phones, PCs, printers, etc.
