Intermec's New RFID Licensing Program

Intermec Technologies has announced a new 90-day "RFID Rapid Start Licensing Program" that will allow access to the firm's intellectual property to RFID technology. The patent licensing plan will run June 1 - August 31. After this period, Intermec is seeking to collect advance fees and royalties for each time an RFID tag is printed, much to the dismay of RFID developers. According to CNET News.com:

Intermec is demanding nominal advance fees, but the royalties--ranging from 2.5 percent for tags to as much as 7.5 percent for other RFID devices--may be a sticking point for some equipment vendors. Intermec is already locked in a bitter patent infringement lawsuit with Symbol Technologies that grew out of a dispute over whether Matrics, an RFID start-up that Symbol acquired last year, is infringing Intermec's RFID patents.
