Item-level tagging and smart shelving

Item-level tagging is not very high on the agenda of most retailers as of now. At present, the top priority for a lot of retailers is getting crate and pallet level tagging right. According to a study conducted by R4 Global Solutions, tagging at the item-level can help in reducing shrinkage by as much as 40%, control out-of-stock and labor expenses. According to the study, employee efficiency improves significantly by implementing item-level RFID for inventory management. rfidjournal.com reports:

The smart shelf software was programmed with each DVD's SKU and its location among the six shelves, which had been divided into a total of four zones each. The number of zones in the shelf corresponded with the number of antennas, so each shelf in the demo setup had four antennas.
