The definition of RFID tags includes those devices that operate below 300 Hz and above 300 MHz. However, devices that work in the visible and infrared portion of the spectrum are not considered for RFID tags. This is because these devices are sensitive to heat and obscuration. The growth of RFID in recent years has been fuelled by the development of low cost RFID tags. These disposable tags have opened up a whole new world of business possibilities. Conventional RFID tags have a microchip embedded in them whereas low cost tags can be chipless as well.
