In Korea, the RFID market covers applications such as asset management, transportation ticketing, and epurse. Projects covering cargo and airline baggage tagging are also being carried out. As in Japan, it is unlikely that retailers will issue a mandate to the suppliers regarding RFID compliance. The growth of RFID has received a fillip in South Korea due to the large-scale pallet and case-level tagging that South Korean suppliers have to perform in order to fulfill the mandates from buyers in Europe and the US. As companies realize the benefits to be had by implementing RFID, its use in supply chains across South Korea will grow.
RFID is also being implemented into applications such as cashless payments and smart houses. The civil engineering industry in South Korea is highly developed and is looking at including RFID functionalities in the new constructions. In these constructions, RFID can be used to develop smart applications such as wireless sensors that are sensitive to movement, smart refrigerators that keep track of the expiry dates of their contents, etc.
