RFID and traditional sensor technology

Traditional sensor networks and intelligent RFID systems could soon get merged to work as one in services-oriented setups. The coming together of RFID and embedded sensor technology has been facilitated by the developments in RFID technology, such that it is now able to perform complicated monitoring and reporting functions. In Korea, for example, the government is developing a city that will have passive and active RFID systems to help in traffic management, street cleaning, disaster management, etc.

"Most RFID applications now focus on industrial and manufacturing applications, but in Korea they have started asking customers questions about what experiences they want through RFID and as a result have spawned new markets, "says Geunho Lee, a senior research fellow with the u-City Forum in Korea.
