What hinders adoption of item-level RFID?

Some time ago, we reported that Tesco has abandoned item-level tagging for its entertainment software products in its 1200 stores, following a pilot project.

Tesco says suppliers must do item-level tagging at their end. Dr. Hau Lee, considered as a world-leading expert in Supply Chain Management, a professor of operations, information and technology at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, and co-founder and Chief Supply Chain Strategist of VC backed company, TrueDemand Software says that there are two main reasons for this.

- First it is RFID ROI.

- (second) is that item-level RFID requires the ability to read item. It means you need to develop a good architecture of readers so that the item information can be read. It requires a good and reliable reader system to be put in place.
