An interesting safety application for RFID is being devised by METI, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry. They are considering recording the repair history of electric and gas products such as water heaters. This is due to an increasing incidence of illegal modifications by repairmen, resulting in at least one death from carbon monoxide poisoning. A pilot test costing 100M yen will be run in 2007. This is exactly the type of RFID application that I like to see happening. A good potential candidate chip is HP's new Memory Spot. Japan has previously run other RFID trials involving safety issues.
