In trying to address consumer concerns about RFID privacy issues and tag data interception, IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Marnlen RFID have come up with an interesting way to "clip" the read range of item-level RFID tags, after a consumer item has been purchased. Consumers merely tear off a portion of a tag enabled with Clipped Tag technology.
An IBM spokesperson says that the act of tearing off part of an RFID tag gives visual proof to the consumer. The reason not to disable the tag entirely is to facilitate item returns or recalls. By clipping the read range of an RFID tag, there is a reduced chance of unauthorized readers intercepting the data on the tag. The solution addresses both consumer perception and technical issues.
IBM has a number of RFID projects in progress, and have a position paper on RFID technology.
